Every one of Rameau’s tragédie lyrique has its share of splendours, but Dardanus has perhaps even more than the others! Here the orchestra is the hero, from the Entrée de guerre to the bewitching final Chaconne, not forgetting the bassoon in ‘Lieux funestes’, the opera’s greatest hit. Emmanuel Resche-Caserta, William Christie’s loyal concertmaster, has chosen the as yet unperformed version from April 1744 for his first major opera production with Les Ambassadeurs ~ la Grande Écurie. In an ideal cast, Reinoud Van Mechelen returns to the title role in which he has triumphed in recent years.
