Flamboyant and spectacular, the Dixit Dominus is nevertheless the work of a young Lutheran composer who was uncomfortable with the Catholic liturgy of his patrons, princes of the Roman Church. This psalm set to music was so popular that Haendel was persuaded to convert to Catholicism – which he politely declined. Less famous is the cantata Donna che in ciel, a jewel of fervent theatricality, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and brought to incandescence by Natalie Perez and Thibault Noally’s Accents.
